Session: Carving Your Personal Path to the C-Suite

Abstract:

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the persistent specter of implicit bias continues to erect barriers, impeding the progress of women beyond middle management. As women forging paths in our career journeys, it falls upon us to confront these obstacles head-on, recognizing our inherent value and steadfastly asserting our position on the corporate ladder where our impact can be truly transformative.

Determination and education are foundational, as you search for your path. Imagine carving-out your unique trajectory and steadfastly pursuing your aspirations. A lot of what shapes your career is unplanned, it is what you learn as you do the job you are in, sometimes you will be called upon to handle tough situations. Keep in mind that it is this experience of using critical thinking, and teamwork to face and overcome challenges that prepares you for leadership.

It is also important to seek guidance from mentors and learn from others about your aspired role. Imagine yourself in that role, and opportunities will come when you are prepared, ready, and open to them. If you are lucky, the next role you land will be the right next step in your career development. This is not actually a journey that you want to face alone, and finding mentors and role models to support your career development is essential.

Self-reflection, and the recognition and cultivation of our own skills is one of the fundamental principles guiding our journey to our ultimate career goal. Each of us possesses unique talents and strengths, which we must harness to drive our careers forward. It's about pursuing what we're good at and becoming experts in areas that align with our passions and values. Embracing and honing your skills empowers you to navigate your career with confidence and purpose.

As leaders, it's not only our responsibility to ascend but also to uplift those around us, regardless of gender. Developing the next generation of leaders means fostering talent from diverse backgrounds and empowering them to thrive; so they are ready to succeed us when our time is done.
Furthermore, we must be vigilant in challenging the status quo and advocating for equality in the workplace. Recognizing and celebrating the achievements of women leaders not only fosters a sense of community but also reinforces our commitment to diversity and inclusion.
To advance we must also cultivate transferable skills that transcend boundaries. Skills such as planning, analysis, creativity, and teamwork are invaluable assets that equip us to seize new opportunities at different levels and in multiple industries.

And then sometimes we also need to learn things that are outside of our comfort zone, the extra skills that we will need to make it to that next rung on the career ladder. Getting your first C-suite role can be a launching point for further C-Suite opportunities, so planning for getting that first role is important.

As we ascend to higher rungs in our career ladders, the transition from operational manager to strategic leader becomes paramount. The ability to synthesize information, anticipate challenges, and set strategic direction is what distinguishes leaders in the C-Suite. The CIO will be navigating the rapidly accelerating technological landscape for the C-Suite team; staying ahead requires adaptability and leveraging your relentless pursuit of knowledge.

In conclusion, the journey to the C-Suite is not just about reaching a destination; it's about empowering ourselves and others along the journey, embracing change, and leading with authenticity and purpose.

I received the 2021 Harvard Medical School Dean's Leadership Award for the Advancement of Women Staff. I began my career as an electrical engineer at a time when very few women were in my field. I have forged the way for many leaders who I have mentored through the ranks to succeed me as I have moved through my career.
